Development of automatic analysis system of Strontium-90 in environmental sample

Automatic strontium-90 analysis system was developed for environmental sample in this research. The system was successful to do wet ashing, chemical separation and ion exchange processes using robot, automatic heating system and so on. Hand-made control program can operate the system by itself.

Fluvial discharges of particulate and dissolved radiocesium from a forest and its monthly trend

As a result of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, a large amount of radiocesium released into the atmosphere was deposited in forests. This study estimated the monthly trend in the fluvial discharges of radiocesium from a forest. The study site was a forested catchment in Kitaibaraki City. Radiocesium in river water was collected with a filtration system as both particulate and dissolved components. Filters and columns including dissolved Cs absorbent were replaced every month. The collected suspended solids were sieved into 2000-3000 $$mu$$m, 500-2000 $$mu$$m, 75-500 $$mu$$m, and $$<$$75 $$mu$$m fractions. The $$^{137}$$Cs concentrations in the samples were measured using $$gamma$$-ray spectrometry with Ge semiconductor detectors. The $$^{137}$$Cs discharge increased with the river water discharge. The particulate $$^{137}$$Cs discharge was dominant in both 2013 and 2014. The $$^{137}$$Cs discharge rate of the dissolved component increased in winter, when the river water discharge decreased.

Temporal variations of radionuclides in seabed sediments off Ibaraki coast

The radiological impact of the radionuclides released from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station to the sea offshore of Ibaraki has been studied in this research. Fifty-one seabed sediments were collected in 2012, 2013 and 2014, respectively. Then, all samples were measured for the activities of $$^{134}$$Cs and $$^{137}$$Cs and some samples were analyzed for the activities of $$^{90}$$Sr. The results indicated that the activities of $$^{134}$$Cs and $$^{137}$$Cs were elevated by the accident and showed a decreasing tendency between 2012 and 2014. The tendency of activity in Kuji Riverestuary area was different from Ibaraki coast area. The difference could be caused by geological feature and grain size of seabed sediment etc. On the other hand, $$^{90}$$Sr activities were ND-0.26 Bq/kg dry. It was no correlation between $$^{90}$$Sr and $$^{137}$$Cs activity. The $$^{90}$$Sr activity released by the accident was small influence on seabed sediment collected around sea offshore of Ibaraki.

Chemical separation of ultra-trace multi-elements in environmental samples

We developed an automatic system for sequential separation with an anion-exchange column to simply and quickly separate less than pico-grams of ultra-trace U, Th, Pb, the lanthanide, and Pu in an environmental sample without foreign contamination. The objective sequential separation of ultra-trace multi-elements succeeded by choosing the HCl-HF mixture based acetic acid for Th separation and the HCl-diluted HF mixture for Pu separation. The objective elements in a multi-elements mixture were completely separated for 6 h 15 min by use of the automatic system and the optimized separation condition.
